"Inverted Artifact"
Commemorative Sculpture
ACSM : Production Design, Fabrication, Installation & Field Logistics
Ivan Toth Depeña - Depeña Studio : Artist / Concept / Design Development
Conceived to honor and identify the history of the chosen site, this sculpture now sits on the location of the first Pepsi franchise bottling plant, established in Charlotte in 1905. ACSM’s team of designers and fabricators developed an intricate system of tiles featuring compressed soda cans set in epoxy and mounted to a rigid aluminum framework. The final assembly creates the illusion of a massive cube of tangled aluminum cans “crash landing” onto this historic spot.

ACSM was hired by artist Ivan Depeña, to collaborate with his studio's team of production managers and interactive lighting programmers for assistance on the development of this project. ACSM provided production design assistance, prototyping, metal frame/light backing fabrication, logistics and installation of the physical metal frame infrastructure required to turn the structural columns (in this six story parking garage) into an interactive work of art. The rough structural concrete required our team to build floating frames that would bridge the imperfection of the environment with the precision cut glass laminate panels and interlaced LED Lights. Once installed, the effect is of a seamless sculptural column, spanning six floors, who’s interactive lighting reacts to the building’s occupants.
We're a group of visual thinkers who believe in the power of art to shift perspectives, inspire public dialog, and build an intimate connection between people and the places they inhabit.
“Chair Monster”

David Furman : Concept Design
Up-cycling found objects into public art has always been a passion for renowned architect and artist, David Furman. The concept for "Chair Monster" was born when a warehouse of hardwood chair frames was donated by fellow architect and furniture manufacturer, Charles McMurray Designs. After many hours of stacking and strategizing, Mr. Furman created a concept sketch of what this serpentine sculpture could look like. Based on his vision, and a simple sketch, ASCM got to work making "Chair Monster" a reality. ACSM's public art team approached the structure from a minimalist perspective, designing a simple, extruded aluminum spine to support the 60 foot long sculpture without taking away from the geometry of the frames themselves. Installed in March for the kickoff of the 2023 Charlotte Shout Festival, this collaboration with Charlotte Center City Partners is the largest public art installation on the Rail Trail in Uptown Charlotte's First Ward District.
“The Garden of Light - A Wish for the Future”
Transit Oriented Sculpture
ACSM : Design, Fabrication, Installation & Field Logistics
Meredith Dallas : Concept Design
“The Garden of Light - A Wish for the Future” creates a place-making environment to engage the public with art- an immersive space in which to walk, take photos, and enjoy beauty. It was the artist's goal to create a hopeful work, connected to nature as a reminder of what is important and good in life. The sculpture is an abstracted garden of light, completed by large, lighted dandelions. The dandelions invite the viewer to make a wish for their future. The garden portion of the work engages with light both during the day and at night, utilizing LED lights at night and surfaces painted with pink metallic fleck paint to shimmer in the daylight.

An initiative to incorporate public artwork throughout Charlotte’s Rail Trail resulted in this colorful exploration of movement and perception. ACSM spearheaded the fabrication and logistics of the project while working closely with the artist to ensure each individual object was installed properly to create the desired artistic effect. The close proximity to the Lynx Blue Line required ACSM to receive special training and authorization from the Charlotte Area Transit System to ensure safe access while working alongside the light rail.
